About this course

A 1-day course to learn some fundamental DIY skills that set you up for key home DIY tasks and from which you can build on with development courses in specific areas. The course is taught by an experienced tradesperson and the class is limited to 8 people in a group. Learning in a group often means you learn a lot more, and you get to meet other like-minded people and importantly enjoy yourself.

What you will learn on the day

  • What hand and power tools to use and in what circumstances
  • How to put up a shelf to suit the needs of your space
  • How to prepare surfaces for painting
  • Painting using brushes and rollers, including cutting in
  • How to measure, cut and put up a mitred joint
  • How to cut and fix plasterboard

Schedule for the day

The course runs from 10am – 3pm. We start promptly so that everyone can make the most of the day so it's recommended to arrive a little early so that you can orientate yourself.

10.00 – arrive and welcome, introductions and housekeeping
10.15 – Tool box talk – what tools you will using today, health & safety protocols
10.30 – tutor demonstration and you practicing cutting and fixing plasterboard
11.10 – tutor demonstration and you practicing measuring, cutting and mounting a mitre cut
11.50 – tutor demonstration and you practicing preparing surfaces for painting
12.30 – lunch
1.00 – choosing paint, brushes and rollers – what to use and when
1.15 – tutor demonstration and you practicing painting with brush and roller
1.55 – choosing fixings – the different sorts of fixing. what fixing to use in what circumstances
2.10 – tutor demonstration and you practicing putting up a shelf
2.50 – cleaning tools and tidying away
3.00 – finish

Equipment and clothing

All the equipment and materials required to carry out the practical exercises are provided for use. No hidden extras here!

We suggest that you wear clothes that you do not mind getting dusty or dirty.

You should wear safety boots (steel toe-capped) – we can offer loan boots, but please let us know in advance so that we can check whether we have your size!

We will provide all other Personal Protective Equipment, which should be returned to us at the end of the day.

Refreshments

We provide tea, coffee and water which you can help yourself to at any time. We also have a small tuck shop selling soft drinks, crisps, chocolates etc.

Our workshop is on an industrial estate and the nearest lunch facilities are a drive away which may suit you if you are arriving by car. Otherwise we recommend students bring their own lunch so that you don't lose any tutor time travelling for lunch! If you are coming by car, please let us know so that we can log your vehicle registration with the gate guard on the day. If you need any help getting to us please do get in touch. 

Your tutor

Your tutor is an experienced tradesperson who has run many courses before and works with people of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced tradespeople. Please feel free to ask him anything as he is always happy to answer tricky queries – feel free to challenge him!

Refunds and cancellations

If you wish to cancel or postpone a training course, you must contact us via email or post. 

For cancellations with more than 14 days before the course starts will mean you get a complete refund. 

For cancellations with between 7 and 14 days from the course start date will mean you get a 70% retund. 

For cancellations with less than 7 days before the course starts means you will not get any refund. This is due to the fact that we cannot guarantee fulfilling your place before the course starts. If we can find a replacement we will offer a 50% refund once the course completes.

We will always try and support our students, so if you feel you can detail the circumstances of your need to cancel then we will consider your refund carefully.
